Meet the Board: Tanya Merkel

We’d like to introduce you to one of our Big Brothers Big Sisters board members, Tanya Merkel. Tanya works as a technology software developer, at OneMain Financial, where she tests the software that is developed by her technology team. She loves serving on our board because it allows her to be involved in children’s lives in a positive way. As a Big, she gets to give back by being a mentor, but as a Board Member, she gets to take her experience and apply it to organizational concerns. She is well-equipped for this role, with degrees from Ball State, Vincennes University, and USI in Telecommunications, Business, Public Relations and Advertising, and Elementary Education.

Tanya grew up in Lynnville, IN, and originally wanted to be a teacher. She believes that children are important because they have the potential to be and do anything they set their minds to. She feels that everyone deserves a mentor to help guide them in that direction. Being passionate, free-spirited, and reliable, Tanya tries to embody the spirit of her favorite quote, “be the change you wish to see in the world.”

When she’s not working, Tanya loves to travel. If you do find her at home, she may be watching her favorite movie, Almost Famous, or reading a good book. She just finished The Handmaid’s Tale.

When asked about her experiences, Tanya said, “I’ve always believed that if you put out good vibes into the world, good vibes will be returned to you. I live every day hoping I’ve put out enough good. This organization puts out so many good vibes, and offers a lot of excellent opportunities to children who need it. I’m proud to be a part of something like that.”

Our Board of Directors are some of the largest advocates and supporters of our organization. We are grateful for an engaged Board of Directors who are committed to our vision for all children to achieve success in life.
