Autumn Brown first learned about Big Brothers Big Sisters during her adolescent years residing in Chicago. Due to limited volunteers, she didn’t receive a Big at that time but attended several events and witnessed the positive impacts the mentoring program provided. She knew then she wanted to volunteer her time to the nonprofit. In 2014, the opportunity to become a Big was presented to her at a volunteer fair.
Since Autumn and Daijha were matched in 2015, Autumn has seen her Little’s confidence blossom.
“She is such a joy to be around, and she lights up any room she enters,” says Autumn.
The two enjoy trying new restaurants, crafting, watching movies, and having car concerts together.
“When Daijha and I were first matched, we shared so many things in common,” say Autumn. “Over time, those interests have changed, for the better. Each outing is an opportunity for us to learn more about one another, and the world around us.”
Autumn says that being a Big has not only provided her with the opportunity to make a positive impact but also has been a rewarding personal journey.
“Daijha has taught me so much about myself and how to improve my strengths,” says Autumn. “There are no words to describe how much four hours a month can tremendously impact the life of a child or adolescent.”
