This month’s Big Spotlight we focus on a Big Sister Laura, one of our awesome Posey County volunteers. Laura has been matched with her Little since July 2014. This summer they will celebrate their fifth year as a match! Laura is a wife, mother of two precious girls, and a chemical engineer at SABIC. Laura is originally from Puerto Rico, but Southern Indiana has been her home since 2012. Laura says she decided to become a Big because mentoring is something she has always had an interest in. She said when she was in high school in Puerto Rico, she participated in a school service program that provided tutoring and also visited with children at a local children’s home. Then while in college at Purdue, a good friend of hers mentored. She said that watching his relationship grow and have such a big impact on his Little Brother, made her want to do the same.
Laura and her Little both share a Puerto Rican heritage. Her Little didn’t know much about that part of her background and Laura has been able to teach her about their culture and traditions.
BBBS of Southwestern Indiana is thankful for great volunteers like Laura!
