Big Spotlight: Anree

Meet Big Sister Anree! Anree has been matched in our community-based program in Vanderburgh County since February of this year! Anree enrolled to be a Big Sister because she was a Little in our program and wanted to give back and walk alongside a youth!

We asked Anree to share her thoughts on becoming a Big Sister in our program and the mentors that she has had along the way. Take a look at what Anree had to share with us ….

What inspired you to become a mentor through BBBS?

What inspired me to become a mentor through BBBS was that I was in BBBS myself when I was a child so I remembered having the experience of having a mentor in the program so I wanted to have the chance to be able to give a transformative experience with a “little” and being able to support them through their life experiences.

What were you most nervous about before you met your Little?

What I was most nervous about before I met my little was wondering she would feel about me and how I was I going to create a bond with her.

What was your first meeting like?

My first meeting with my little was absolutely fun but we were both a bit nervous of course. Once we started to play the icebreaker game, she kind of leaned to mom for some of the questions but as we moved closer through the game, she definitely started to open up a little. Once we had our first outing, we went to Orangeleaf and I realized that she was not that same shy person that was at the first meeting. She definitely did most of the talking that night and I definitely enjoyed listening and getting to know her.

What is your favorite memory that you and your Little have made together?

My favorite memory that we’ve made together is definitely going to Orangeleaf and starting our first scrapbook together. Since our first outing, we have made Orangeleaf our favorite place and decided to put a scrapbook together for all of our outings within the first year together. I can’t wait to create more memories going forward and completing our first year in our scrapbook.

Have you seen any changes in your Little since being matched?

I can say that I have seen some changes in my little since we’ve been matched. Of course, when we matched, it was in the middle of the school year and she stated that she didn’t like certain subjects in school and wouldn’t bring up school much unless I would ask. Towards the end of the school year, she started to bring up how school was going without me asking sometimes and explained how she wanted to a try a new sport this school year.

What is your favorite part of being matched?

My favorite part about being matched is that I’m always super excited and looking forward to hanging out with my little every time we have an activity planned. We’re always having each other laughing and we love spending time with each other. She’s not only my little sister but also my best friend!

What has been the hardest part of being matched?

I would say for me the hardest part is trying to keep in touch with her on the regular. We really don’t text often due to busy schedules but I do try to pop a text every now and then to check in with her and the family but probably not as often as I should.

Do you ever feel discouraged in your match and how do you overcome that?

I haven’t felt discouraged about anything in my match with my little.

My little has taught me to get out and enjoy life in whatever you do. Once we had our first meeting, we both figured out that we are homebodies but whenever we hangout, we’re both excited to get out and actually have fun whatever we decide to do.

Who was your mentor and How did they impact you?

The people I would say would be my mentors would be my mother and my godmother.

My mother and godmother I would say impacted me because I looked up to them and they also helped mold me into the woman that I am today. If they didn’t push me well as they did, I probably wouldn’t have been able to accomplish the goals that I accomplished in life. I appreciate them so much!
